Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Two-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging) Specifications
Can anything keep Captain Jack Sparrow down? Well, as long as Johnny Depp plays the offbeat pirate of the high seas, as he does in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the answer is “Not bloody likely, mate!” This fourth installment of the Pirates franchise is jolly good fun–nearly as good as the first one, in fact. The writing is crisp, the action amazing–and there’s the addition of a foe finally the match of Captain Jack: Ian McShane as the dreaded, and dreadful, Blackbeard. McShane seems to be having as much fun as Depp, and that’s saying something–channeling his dastardly character on Deadwood but keeping his epithets rated PG-13. Adding to the festivities is the winsome Penélope Cruz, as Angelica, a woman with a past entwined with Jack Sparrow’s. Angelica now might be a fearsome pirate herself–or maybe just a cunning con artist tugging at Sparrow’s heartstrings.
The action in On Stranger Tides centers on the quest to find the legendary Fountain of Youth in the Americas. But the plot, of course, is incidental in the Pirates films. From the earliest scenes, it’s clear the action, and Depp’s winking at the camera, are the stars. Captain Jack stages a giant food fight in front of the King of England, culminating in a chandelier scene worthy of The Phantom of the Opera, and he’s off at a gallop. Along for the ride are previous cast members Geoffrey Rush (who’s sold out and is now an unctuous representative of His Majesty’s Navy); loyal sidekick Kevin McNally, who narrowly escapes a death sentence, and then celebrates by leaping on board Captain Jack’s fraught mission; and Keith Richards as Jacky’s dad, who speaks few words, but wise ones. There are even zombie pirates, and a mysterious mermaid. Pirates of the Caribbean isn’t suitable for viewers under 8 or so, because it’s dark and intense in spots, but otherwise, it’s a rollicking good popcorn film. –A.T. Hurley

Winnie the Pooh: Growing Up [VHS] Overviews
There are two animated films in this video, which address the themes of growing up. In the first, Christopher Robin learns to take responsibility for his mistakes when he breaks a bust of his great grandfather while the animals are helping him clean his room. At first, he attempts to hide in his friends’ houses, but he can’t fit in any of them. Then he runs away with Pooh. But after a good talk with Eeyore, who explains that “everybody makes mistakes, we just have to face up to them,” he decides to go home. This film shows the importance of friendship, as well as being honest and responsible–both good lessons for young children. More mystifying is the second feature in this video, which opens as Christopher Robin gets dressed up for a big party because “girls will be there”. His animal friends, upset by this development, fear Christopher may leave them forever for the grown-up world. They build a grown-up house for him and even recruit a girlfriend in the person of a scarecrow. For any lover of the classic children’s books, the thought of Pooh and Christopher Robin thinking about dating is strange, and most small children wouldn’t have it on their minds, either. At this age, “growing up” should be more about developing social skills than finding a date. Also, the idea that an inanimate scarecrow is an acceptable substitute for a real companion is not a positive message for either girls or boys to receive. –Elisabeth Keating

This 1961 family film, based on the novel by Marguerite Henry, inspired a generation of children to name their pet dogs, cats, turtles, and so on after the lovely colt of the title. Set on Virginia’s coastal island of Chincoteague, the film begins on “Pony-Penning Day,” an annual celebration that involves rounding up for auction wild ponies on neighboring islands. Two young children, a brother and sister (David Ladd, son of Alan, and Pam Smith), capture an elusive mare nicknamed Phantom and hope to take ownership of her colt, Misty. A stranger has other plans, however, setting his mind on buying both animals, and the disappointed kids turn to their sympathetic townspeople to find a way out of the dilemma. A great-looking film shot on location, Misty is an effusive adventure about that special, even mythic, bond between children and wild creatures. Performances are strong, the scenery is splendid, and the film lingers in the memory for a long, long time. –Tom Keogh

It’s hard to know who thought it would be a good idea to make a live-action version of Disney’s animated classic. The one bright notion anyone had was casting Glenn Close as Disney über-villainess Cruella de Vil; her flashing eyes and angular features are a perfect match and do credit to what is one of the most indelible animated characters Disney has ever created. The story remains essentially the same, focusing on Cruella’s plot to kidnap the puppies of a young married couple (Jeff Daniels and Jolie Richardson) and make them into a coat. But the dreaded John Hughes, who wrote this script, fills it with sadistic slapstick and far too few genuine laughs. The human actors work hard, but to little avail; thankfully, there’s a passel of puppies to regularly steal scenes when the going gets dreary–although there are only so many laughs to be had from inappropriate dog puddles. –Marshall Fine

Sky High Overviews
The idea of a high school for superheroes will appeal to teens and preteens, who struggle powerlessly with petty authoritarians, bullying peers, and their own rampant hormones, and “Sky High” spotlights young Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano, “Lords of Dogtown”), the son of top-of-the-heap superheroic couple the Commander (Kurt Russell, “Tango & Cash”) and Josie Jetstream (Kelly Preston, “View from the Top”). Unfortunately, though he’s about to be dropped into the midst of kids who can stretch, turn to living stone, or shoot fire, Will has yet to develop any powers at all–and may never develop them. His development anxieties (and some entertaining metaphors for high school social hierarchies) contrast with a bubbling plot by an old foe of the Commander’s to destroy Sky High and all of superhero-dom. “Sky High” has a great supporting cast (including Bruce Campbell, “Army of Darkness”; Dave Foley, “NewsRadio”; Lynda Carter, “Wonder Woman”; and Cloris Leachman, “Young Frankenstein”) and a handful of funny, offhand bits, but the bulk of the movie is bland and obvious. Younger kids may not mind the clumsy action scenes, generic dialogue, and tacky production design, but even comic-book-loving teenagers will label “Sky High” bargain-basement. “–Bret Fetzer”

X-Men: Volume Four (Marvel DVD Comic Book Collection) Specifications
A pair of potent multi-episode stories–the tragic tale of supermutant Proteus, and Apocalypse’s world-shattering scheme to attain godhood–are the cornerstone of this double-disc set, which compiles most of the fourth season of the 1990s X-Men animated series. The Proteus two-fer, adapted from the 1979-80 story line in Uncanny X-Men, concerns a superbeing with powers of possession and reality alteration who escapes confinement at the Muir Island Research Centre (where he’d been placed by his mother, Moira McTaggart) to search for his father, who rejected him at birth. It’s a fairly moving story that hews closely to the print version (Proteus is less lethal here, and the meeting between father and son has a milder ending) and should please X-Men fans who value accurate depictions of the canon. The Apocalypse arc, which unspools over four episodes, is more complex: “Beyond Good and Evil” has the archvillain kidnapping psychics–including Jean Grey and Professor Xavier–to unleash a wave of mental energy that will destroy the world so that he can rebuild it in his image. The scope of the story is fairly impressive (it was originally intended as the conclusion of the series) and satisfies both the action and speculative-fiction elements that make the X-Men such an enduringly popular series. A second two-parter on disc 1, “Sanctuary” (based loosely on the “Fatal Attractions” arc from 1993), finds Magneto securing a permanent home for mutants on Asteroid M, but running afoul of Fabian Cortez and his Acolytes.
Volume 4’s second disc is a grab bag of assorted single-story episodes, some good (“The Lotus and the Steel,” which nicely encompasses Wolverine’s travels to Japan; “Family Ties,” in which Magneto is revealed to be the father of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch), others less so (“Have Yourself a Morlock Little X-Mas,” in which the subterranean Morlocks seek Wolverine, Jubilee, and Storm to aid an ailing Leech). Unfortunately, these are presented out of broadcast order (as is the case with the other Marvel/Disney X-Men discs), which may prove somewhat aggravating for those looking for a complete-season set. Also irksome is the continued lack of special features, though the image quality of the episodes is solid. –Paul Gaita
